Each year, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) launches its “Visionaries of the Year” fundraising campaign, and this year I was honored to be nominated as a candidate. I am writing today to ask for your support of LLS’s mission in its efforts to find cures for blood cancers and to assist patients and families as they battle this disease.
From March 6– May 15, our team goal is to raise $25,000 which will go directly to LLS in support of its longstanding goal: a world without blood cancers. If we raise over $50K by May 15, 2025, we can connect our team name to an LLS-funded research portfolio to honor our efforts to help people with blood cancers.
Like many of you, I have witnessed first-hand the debilitating effects that leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma can have on those who suffer from these blood cancers, and on the friends and family who care for and nurture their loved ones. At a young age, I lost my uncle to leukemia. My uncle was always someone who would brighten up any room he walked into. I always looked up to him and valued our relationship. Just seven years ago, I also was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the young age of 21. Not only was this diagnosis terrifying, but at times it also felt a bit isolating. Being able to share my experience and not being afraid to ask questions has empowered me to strive to make a difference in the lives of those who are still battling this disease. This year, I have decided to dedicate my campaign in honor of my uncle, who I know would be so proud.
There are many reasons to be proud to support LLS’s efforts. For instance, approximately 40% of new cancer therapies approved by the FDA since 2000 were first approved for blood cancer patients. Many of these LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but they have also led to a tremendous number of advances in other types of cancers, like bone, brain, and breast. Your contribution will have rippling effects across the entire cancer landscape.
Here is how you can be part of the cure…
My campaign to be the Visionary the Year is all about dollars raised. Every dollar I raise is a vote for me and a vote to cure cancer. I am asking you today to join me in this campaign. I have until May 15th to reach my goal of raising $25,000. Yes, I know this is ambitious, but this goal reflects the urgency of the need and I could use your help!
There are two ways to make your tax-deductible contribution by May 15th, 2025:
You can mail your check to me at 88 Newell Street, West Warwick, RI, 02893 Please make check payable to “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society” and print Jess Orokos in the memo section.
I thank you in advance for supporting this incredible need. I’ll keep you posted on how the campaign goes. For now, I am grateful for your friendship and support.
